The Kool-Aid Yarn Dyeing Experiment

I've wanted to try this ever since I saw lots of finished Kool-Aid projects on Ravelry and realized how random and vibrant the colors tend to be. I ended up using a few different packets of Kool-Aid (which I forgot to photograph, of course)-- lemon lime, tropical punch, grape, peach mango, orange, and Wilton blue gel food coloring (because the grocery store was out of blue Kool-Aid colors). I used the crock pot for the actual dyeing process, which made it super easy-- I could wander away and forget about it for a while without worrying about it burning or other scary things happening to it. It was fun and made the house smell like candy!

It was originally white Lion Brand Fisherman's Wool, and I wound it into 100 yard hanks because the plan is to turn them into wool soakers for the baby. I really like the purple/green/blue colorway the most, even though the green was a complete accident! First I used Wilton's "leaf green" food coloring since I was out of green Kool-Aid, but it turned out too light, so I changed the water and tried Peach Mango Kool-Aid on top of it. It turned out a really lovely pea/yellowish green, which goes great with the blue and purple. At first I kept overthinking which colors should go together, but it really is easier and more fun when you just start guessing and randomly mixing colors.

    1. Yes! You leave the yarn in until all the Kool-Aid/food coloring is absorbed, and then rinse it afterward and the color stays put. It's neat!
