DIY Duvet Cover

This was done for my friend Kalyn. She had two Queen sheets and a length of Ikea fabric and wanted to turn them into a duvet cover, so I used this tutorial and whipped it up for her. It was really easy! The most difficult part was cutting the sheets down to the dimensions of the duvet, because I've never been great at cutting a straight line, no matter how many times I measure and trace. It's a lot of fabric to wrestle with, but the whole thing was done in a few hours and I think it turned out pretty well. I probably should have pressed the finish product one last time (or threw it in the dryer), but I was lazy and counting on the wrinkles to fall out after a few days.

I want to make one for our bed with chevron sheets, but I can't find any good ones! I'd like to recreate this cover instead of spending $80, but apparently chevron sheets like that do not exist. Or either my googling skills are failing me. Wah.

  3. Cutting straight lines in big pieces of fabric tip: Fold the fabric, weight it down, put one blade of the scissors in the fold, cut RIGHT down the fold.

    Works like a dream!

    2. These are the kind of things I just sort of *know* because I was taught to sew at such a VERY young age. My grandmother was a seamstress. My 2 aunts were professional seamstresses - one worked on mens' tailoring. I had my own thimble at age 3. (It was TINYYYYY).

There are so many things that I don't even think of as tips!

    3. Ahhh that's so awesome, I didn't know that! I took a class in high school and learned the basics, and then bought a sewing machine when I was around 20 and started doing things like shortening/taking in thrifted dresses and making bags, but I've never dove into actual intensive sewing the way I do with knitting. It's something I really want to get better at! I know how to make things from a pattern but I get frustrated easily because I just don't have the practice. I will totally keep you in mind when I get stuck on things, haha!

    4. Oh, please do!! I don't sew much anymore but I did VERY much for a long time. I even made my own suits at one point. I made tons and tons of skirts, dresses, shirts, shorts, pants, etc.

Sometimes when I see those websites that sell retro-looking clothes for tons of money, I sigh. :D
