So last week we went to Santa Fe, which was fun but honestly I like Albuquerque much better. It's just slightly stranger and much more interesting. I'm not happy with our photos at all, though! I debated even making a post about it; I just hate midday light so much, I never take good photos in it. Like these mural photos-- they would have been so much better in the evening.
Anyway, we'll go back and take better pictures. I especially want to spend a lot of time on the Turquoise Trail, which is a scenic/historic route connecting the two cities. On it were a few tiny little western towns with quirky shops-- there was even a general store, which we assumed would be a silly touristy one that sells penny candy like one we went to in Tennessee-- but it was an actual general store. Didn't expect that.
I know my posts haven't been very outfit focused lately, and I guess it's because I've been so into our little day trips that I haven't taken the time to do any specific photo sets. I do have a couple in mind (with the vintage dresses from my mom) so I promise they're coming! I hope it hasn't alienated anyone, it's just what I feel is right for the blog at the moment.

Bad light, weird face, boooo.

This is the "Miraculous Stairway" in the Loretto Chapel. Apparently, the chapel was originally built in the 19th century without a stairway, and one day a stranger showed up and offered to build one for the nuns. The mysterious carpenter guy used a few simple tools like a square, a saw, some warm water and non-native wood. He disappeared soon after completing it without asking for payment. The staircase is twenty feet tall and apparently stands without any nails or center support. Because of this, people have deemed it miraculous and thought that it was St. Joseph who built the stairway.
According to Snopes, this isn't true and it's totally not miraculous. But it's still pretty to look at!

Zombie girl?

The Kakawa Chocolate House was amazing. We got truffles and lavender-flavored hot chocolate called "Marie Antoinette"-- what could be better than that?!

A Western-gentleman of a hounddog.

Oooh, I love winding staircases! And you look so pretty!
ReplyDeleteI'm envious of your trips through the Southwest, I've been really digging Southwestern jewelry lately and it's hard to find here in Chicago.
ReplyDeleteI'm a photographer so I know what you mean about the harsh light of midday. Unfortunately it's not always possible to take pictures during the 'magic hour' so I've learned to be more easy going about the high contrast/crazy shadows.
Is that cowboy boot heaven??!! I believe so! I would have went nuts there.
ReplyDeleteAs for the "zombie girl"-- uhm... kinda scary HAHA.
:)
Yay for Santa Fe! :) I took a trip with my sister and Mom back in February. Did you get to stop in at a cute shop called Doodlets? It has the cutest little knick-knacks and tiny things. :)
ReplyDeletethose cowboy boots are making my heart beat faster! I need to get myself some of those :)

I've been reading your blog for a long time now, but I've never post a comment. I think you have a very great style, you look always happy and that's part of why your blog is so lovely. But what I really love is the image of the USA you show. All your travels makes me want to go there (I'm from France, and what we usually see from the US is well...Ny, LA,...) and to discover its different spaces by myself.
ReplyDeleteIsabel: I do too! I'm a sucker for them. And thank you!!
ReplyDeleteLeilani: Ugh I know right, I'm going to have to learn to just deal with it! It's horrible because even if I'm out at that time of day I'm reluctant to even try to take any pictures. But I suppose that's silly and I should do it anyway.
enie meenie: RIGHT!? That is why I suddenly wanted cowboy boots when I moved here! They come in so many pretty COLORS.
HM: Yaaay! No I didn't but that sounds fun. We went to the Chocolate House, had lunch at The Pantry and walked around the plaza. And I bought a little wooden bunny from a local artist. ^_^
Charles: SAME! I long for a pair. I wouldn't even know where to start, though!
lou: Awww thank you so much, seriously. That's been my number one goal with this blog since I started traveling. You have no idea how happy it made me to hear that! <3
