I remembered this recipe from an old issue of Bust and set about finding it online-- here is the Bust article, and here is a site with the original scans (and recipes from other old Hollywood stars).
This week I've just been laying around with my two cat-dogs (they nap so much) and knitting while watching silent movies and episodes of Arrested Development. Strange combination! The other day I decided to do exactly what the article suggests and make vanilla marlow to have as a snack while watching Clara Bow in It. I don't usually care for marshmallows but it's actually quite delicious! Actually, if you're from the South and have ever made snow cream it reminds me of a rich version of that.
Now I just need people to help me eat it because it's very tempting to eat the whole bowl and I really shouldn't do that.
Recipe:
*Place 40 marshmallows and 2 cups whole milk in a double boiler or a bowl placed over a saucepan of simmering water. Once the marshmallows have melted, stir in 2 Tbsp. vanilla, then let cool. When the mixture starts to stiffen (about 30 minutes), combine with 1 pint heavy cream that has been whipped to stiff peaks. Pour the mixture into a plastic container with a lid, and place in the freezer until frozen, about 2 hours. Serve in bowls like ice cream. This recipe serves 8 but can be halved.

ha ha yes, yay comments! wouldn't it be a feat if i could veganize this vanilla marlow recipe? also, have you always lived in the south? i am a northern girl.
ReplyDeletei wanted to tell you how beautiful and inspiring your writings are. thank you for being!
Hahaha oh goodness that WOULD be a feat! So much dairy. I'm not a big ice cream fan so I don't usually eat too many things like this, but I thought I'd give it a try anyway (as long as it's in small quantities, haha!)
ReplyDeleteYes I've always lived in eastern NC, but that's all about to change very soon! :D
And thank you so much!! That's the best compliment ever. <3
