To make up for this, I think I'll just present to you my favorite Halloween ladies of all time:
Wednesday Addams

I wanted to be her as a kid, and despite being 24 I still kind of do.
Lydia Deetz

I also wanted to be her. I used to watch Beetlejuice when I was little and make my mom rewind over and over to the part where they sit her down in that big chair. The exorcising bit terrified me a little because I didn't want Barbara and Adam to die, even though I had seen it a billion times and knew they survived! (Sidenote: did anyone else used to watch the Beetejuice cartoon??)
Claudia from Interview with the Vampire

Okay, I wanted to be her too. I had/have a lot of weirdo idols, okay? She's just so gorgeous and smart, and the whole movie is romantic and perfect. I started reading the Vampire Chronicles at thirteen and was hooked even more.
Catwoman

I used to watch reruns of the '60s television show and Catwoman was by far my favorite villain. I honestly can't remember if I loved Lee Merriwether, Julie Newmar, or Eartha Kitt the best-- I think I liked them all in different ways. When Batman Returns came out I was seven and so obsessed with Michelle Pfeiffer's version. I had a poster on my wall and everything. I suppose the '60s version had the best costume (although seven year-old me dug the latex for some disturbing reason), but Michelle was so perfect for the role.
Siouxsie Sioux

Siouxsie & the Banshees are one of my favorite bands and I've always adored Siouxsie's look!
The Bride of Frankenstein

Look at this fierce monster, being all gorgeous and big-haired and played by the lovely Elsa Lanchester. The best moments of that entire film are the few at the end with the Bride in them. I have this unexplained obsession with her and I'm not quite sure why--maybe it's the hair, or the entire look, or the fact that I've always felt she was a kind of feminist icon for refusing to marry someone that clearly appalled her, despite being created for that exact purpose. Which brings me to:
Magenta from The Rocky Horror Picture Show

I dressed up as Lydia, Wednesday, and Catwoman for Halloween as a kid. No one knew who I was as Lydia and Wednesday, though, but it was exciting for me anyway. I was eight with my Wednesday costume, and my mom used that fake spray stuff to color my long blonde hair black.
I'm sure this year's Halloween will consist of me watching Rocky Horror before work and eating lots of candy throughout the night, but I desperately wish I was going to a costume party. I hope you guys have fun and be safe!

HI! haha. To repeat: I still love you and all of these Halloween girls, I still want to do the Rocky Horror dress-up thing with YOU Before I Die, I still want to add the Sanderson sisters [again: sistaaas! can't not be said] to this wonderful list, and I'm sorry you have to work on Halloween. Because that is a travesty. Pardon me if it is dumb to re-comment. ;)
ReplyDeletePhoebe: Ahaha no thank you for re-commenting! :D ID took too long to load and was doing weird things, idk. I should have picked wordpress to begin with because I can't STAND not having threaded comments! Waahh.
ReplyDeleteAnd YES the Sanderson SISTAAAAS!! I should have added them of course. I used to pretend to be Sarah or Wini and made whatever friend that was visiting be Mary, rofl.
I want to do Rocky Horror with you too! The next place I move to better have midnight showings, this is just ridiculous, not having them anywhere close. :(
you were a bit of creepy child yes? I was but in a differnt way, more of a loner girl who write lots of poetry. So cute you did those costumes, I woulda known who you were with Wednesday, I was too scared to see Beetlejuice til I was a teen though.
ReplyDeleteI love Interview With The Vampire. I really need to read the book.
ReplyDeleteI am surprised that no one realized you were Wednesday Adams, she is so iconic, even then.
And yes, I watched Beetlejuice the cartoon. Wasn't it on about the same time as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Ghostbusters cartoons?
omg I went as Wednesday once and one of my friends i going as her this year :)
ReplyDeleteTHERE IS A BEETLEJUICE CARTOON? What.
ReplyDeleteAlso love your gothic-y Halloween inspirations!
I remember watching the Addams Family on TV when it was a new show. I was seven or eight years old then. (My dad hated the Addams Family. He said the Munsters was a much better show.) Morticia Addams was my first childhood crush! When I was 17, my girlfriend and I dressed as Gomez and Morticia Addams. That was my most memorable Halloween.
ReplyDeleteHalloween is my birthday, so I’ve always made a big deal out of the holiday. I have boxes and boxes of Halloween decorations, magazines, books, and vintage costumes. My collection has grown to the point that I’ve divided my stuff into two collections that I display on alternate years.
I liked watching the old Batman series, too. Julie Newmar was my favorite Catwoman, although Michelle Pfeiffer made a great Catwoman also.
I liked the Beetlejuice movie also, and I watch it every Halloween along with classics like Dracula, Frankenstein, and the Mummy. I prefer the old horror films over the current slasher movies. I have all of the Halloween series of films in my collection, but I’ve only watched a couple of them. I own 50 old-time radio programs with Halloween themes that I like to listen to during the month of October.
I love Siouxsie, have been a fan since 1979. I also like Lene Lovich, who was from the same era.
Have a Happy Halloween!
The Olde Goth
I have to agree about catwoman, my costume is inspired by her this year, although not directly copied.
ReplyDeletei can't believe i forgot about the cartoon!!
ReplyDeleteall of these girls were my heroes growing up
happy halloween! :)
I was Wednesday Adams in 7th grade! I wanted to be her too - she was just so cool!
ReplyDeleteAlso - I totally loved the Beetlejuice cartoon :)
ohh I used to love he beetlejuice cartoon!! When I was in 8th I had my hair with 2 braids like Merlina Addams (Wednesday in your country Merlina in mine) my hair is black and thick and I'm really pale skinned, notice that all the kids stared at me but I didn't minded I loved it!!! This year I was a little kid with tights socks, a girly dress, 2 pig tails, natural make up... and had fun watching horror movies, eating, and telling creepy stories that we have lived...
ReplyDeleteYay, excellent post! Love the Janet Weiss quote in the title.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I don't think I've ever seen the Beetlejuice movie but I TOTALLY remember the cartoon! I watched it all the time back in the day.
I agree with pretty much all of these. Especially Lydia, Wednesday, Claudia, and Catwoman. I wanted to be all of them too growing up and YES I watched the Beetlejuice cartoon.
ReplyDeleteI think were were just gothy little girls.
this was a wonderful post. I grew up enamoured with Wednesday and Lydia and have been in love with Sioxsie for awhile now too. girl power!
ReplyDeletep.s. i like your blog very much. delightful xx
I love Hallowe'en too! And Elsa's Bride... awesome big hair! :D
ReplyDeleteWow, you'd make an absolutely perfect Siouxsie Sioux! Funny you mentioned Magenta too, in high school I was totally into Rocky Horror and used to dress up and go downtown for the "live" performance xD. If you haven't done that already you totally should :D!
ReplyDeletehooray for siouxsie!
ReplyDeleteI just found your blog today. i can't believe I only found it so late. But I love it! I was never a creepy kid. A little lonely and shy maybe, but perfectly normal. Except that I secretly like almost all the characters you just mentioned above. I simply adore Wednesday Adams, even more than Morticia. I've been trying to find my perfect Wednesday Adams dress ever since. Which version of Wednesday Adams do you love best? The animated series included.
ReplyDeletegreat post
