(Please excuse the messy art room!)
Adorable velvety '90s dress: Maude Loves Harold Vintage (best name ever, and thank you!!)
Bag: Thrifted
Boots: ? These are so old and I haven't worn them in ages, but they are clunky and awesome.
I never actually got to dress like this in the '90s because I was still a kid during the My-So-Called-Life/Reality Bites/Empire Records era. But I specifically remember looking up to those people and wanting to be very Angela Chase and Winona Ryder when I grew up-- all flannel shirts and red lipstick and casual dresses with boots. The closest I came was in middle school when I discovered Nirvana and wore a flannel shirt with everything, but by that time it was 1997 and I had missed the boat (I always miss the boat).
I still adore this style though, because I romanticized it so much as a pre-teen and it's hard to forget those things. It reminds me of listening to the Smashing Pumpkins and Nirvana and Hole, and being all angsty and woe-is-me in middle school. Which is perfectly fine when looking back on it, but I certainly wouldn't want to repeat it. (sidenote: still love those bands, of course. I saw SP last year and it was lovely but not quite what I imagined as a kid!)
I really shouldn't have bought a new dress, but I saw this one and almost died because it was exactly what I was looking for. I'm on a mission to find more dresses like this, and I really need a pair of doc martens. I'm ashamed to say I've never had a pair, and after Isabel's extreme good luck of thrifting two pairs (one is purple!) I am completely obsessed.
You know something else.. Reality Bites is almost scarily relevant to my life right now. After finishing grad school next year I will be faced with actually trying to find a job in this economy (thank you, economy collapse, for coinciding with my college graduations!) and I'm still coping with paying bills and having lots of responsibilities and blah blah blah.
I feel absolutely amazing in this outfit, by the way. The dress is so flowy and comfortable and it's sort of warm outside today, so I've ditched the usual tights in my attempt to not be afraid of having bare legs.

Also, I really want to thank everyone for the wonderful comments that I've been receiving lately! Everyone has been so incredibly encouraging and supportive and you really have no idea how much it means to me. ♥ I've subscribed and linked to so many fantastic new blogs, and receiving positive feedback from bloggers that I respect and admire has meant the world to me! So thank you guys a ton.

I love it! I never noticed so many liberty prints in the 90's! Check out the girl with the yellow tights! So cute!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you on the '90s. I was too young as well to get into the whole fashion scene but always admired others who did. And now I'm glad it's back - I feel like I get a second chance!
ReplyDeleteI feel the same way with the blogosphere being so encouraging and supportive to new bloggers! It's incredible and I've really loved starting and maintaining a blog. I'm glad you're here too!
Diana - I know! Janeane Garofalo looks so awesome in that movie.. I want to steal that entire outfit.
ReplyDeleteDiane - Yes, we get a second chance! That's exactly how I feel. And now I can appreciate it more, anyway. :)
It really is a community and I feel so lucky and happy to be a part of it!
gorgeous dress! :)
ReplyDeleteI love your dress so much, it's just velvety goodness and beautiful. x
ReplyDeleteOh, I love this look!
ReplyDeleteI too was born a few years late to wear Docs and swishy dresses with flair... but I love the style.
This post represents all I used to love in the '90s, a decade I'm still in love with!! Very interesting post!

You look great in this dress! The 90s look really suits you. And you resemble Winona Ryder too, I think. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks so much everyone! :D ♥ ♥
ReplyDeleteSarah-Lous: Yay I'm glad you liked it, thank you!!
a cat of impossible colour: Oh wow thank you so much!! I don't think I look like her specifically, but I certainly love her whole look. I was obsessed with her in Beetlejuice as a kid!
Pansy, I awarded you!
ReplyDeleteThat dress is cute. I'm still not ready for a full blown 90s revival, but your outfit is definitely chic.
ReplyDeletehehe, I am so right there with you :)

ReplyDeletelol, just saw you are, 23. :-) I was obsessed with all these in my teenage years, Empire Records a huge amount, Liv Tyler and that amazing soundtrack. It is true Reality Bites, but the market will turn around, it has to.
ReplyDeleteFlori Lee: Thanks! :D It really is so soft. Those boots are so heavy and clanky, I've forgotten how tough I feel when I wear them, haha.
ReplyDeleteEyeliah: Exactly, yes! That soundtrack is amazing, and I have seen Empire Records too many times to count. And looking at that cover.. wtf is that random dog all about? Unless I'm completely spacing and there's a dog somewhere in there, but the only one I can think of is that close-up of the little dog figure when Mark is playing GWAR.. hmm.
I just found your blog, its really cool. and i love your hair!
ReplyDeleteAhhhh, the 90s is my favourite thing in the world. Hole, My So Called Life, floral dresses and Docs all make me want to jump for joy. Thanks for the mention, by the way!
ReplyDeleteI just stumbled upon your blog and I just wanted to say that I'm really looking forward to your future posts! I'm also finishing library school in a year/trying to figure out how the hell I'm going to find a job...chin up though because word on the street is that libraries are still hiring :).
ReplyDeleteOh dear god YES! I was addicted to My socalled life just for the fashion, I can't get enough flannels and baggy floral.
ReplyDeleteI need more great 90s movies. I always died for the Crow, kuz I'm more on the gothy side of the 90s than the grungey, but God DAMN is the grungey good.
that's such a lovely dress! i adore the print!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous dress!
ReplyDeleteI've rediscovered the 90s recently and I love them.
Reality Bites was/is one of my favorite movies of all time. Winona Ryder is such an amazing actress. I love her in everything she does. If you need money after graduation just do what she did in R.B. haha. Hope you can get your parents gas card. ("We're going to eat gas.")
ReplyDeleteI bought my first pair of Docs in London in 1996 and wore them non-stop through high school.
And The Smashing Pumpkins were my favorite band all through high school. When I saw them in concert D'Arcy had already left the band. :( But it rocked none the less!
Thanks for this post. It took me way back. haha.
XOXO
I remember when that film came out and I watched it about ten times. I especially loved Winona's character in it and everytime I hear the 'My Sharona' song, it reminds Me of that film.
ReplyDeleteI had a number of pairs of Docs back then too, all black but also: patent, velvet and glittery. ;-)
