Just like a fairy tale..

Rapunzel
Sorry about the lack of outfit pictures lately, I was attacked with sickness over the weekend and am quite miserable and blarg at the moment. I’ve been in that weird fog that comes with cold medicine and lots of sleep, so hopefully this post will make a bit of sense.

I was never hugely obsessed with Disney as a kid or anything, even though Cinderella, Snow White, and of course Alice were on heavy rotation at my house. Well, and Aladdin and The Little Mermaid. Okay so I watched lots of Disney apparently, but I was never super into the Disney princesses the way girls these days seem to be (I guess that has something to do with the heavy marketing of the franchise, though).

Anyway, with the upcoming The Princess and the Frog, Disney is returning to hand-drawn animation (as they should) and the concept art looks beautiful so far. But I'm even more excited for Rapunzel—it’s not in 2D, but this new style of CGI that they’re test driving. They want to combine the feel of hand-drawn animation with the flow of CGI, and on top of that the inspiration for the film is Fragonard’s The Swing. (!!) The goal is to make it look like a French Rococo painting come to life:

Rococo was one of my favorite periods to study in art history class. I love the softness and how dream-like and delicate it is. I also like the hidden sexuality and how Rococo paintings seem to be one big innuendo if you look close enough… oh, Disney. I am not surprised by this.

This is obviously just concept art but I think it's capturing that glowy roundness perfectly. And she's voiced by Kristin Chenoweth!

  3. Oh! This looks stunning. I really don't like the computer animated films, but this could be great. I also don't know what it is with Disney princesses lately...I never really wanted to be a princess and I find them so vapid in those films...

  4. The Clothes Horse - I did too, and the only one with a really strong personality was Jasmine-- everyone else was pretty questionable, haha. I think Disney is feeling the backlash against the hyper-realistic CGI stuff, and it's about time really. I'm just so into the look of Rapunzel, though! I hope it doesn't disappoint.

  5. This looks amazing! I'm so glad they're returning to their roots. I came over all glowy and nostalgic when I saw the hand-drawn animation in the beginning of 'Enchanted'. Agree with you about the Disney princesses ... just don't get it. My favourite heroine was Belle from Beauty and te Beast, purely because she was a brunette and always had her nose in a book. Mulan is a very close second.

  6. I have been eyeing that Payless collection--I can't wait for it to drop, but I will definitely need to see them in person before I buy any.
